BROADBRIDGE HEATH YOUTH - Report from the physio’s bench

The U18s finished their season in fine style with a 2-1 victory over close rivals Shoreham, the points from this game securing runners up spot in the Sussex County Youth League. Winning 6 and drawing 1 from their final 7 games meant that the youth team’s 2 year plan, originally set out by the management, finally came to fruition, representing just reward for the hard-work and commitment put in by the whole squad.

January saw Heath lose only their 2nd game of the season but then they drilled 4 past Forest and 7 past Storrington.  Highlights of the Forest game were Andy Wadd’s superb headed goal, the skipper finding space in the box like his Villa hero Martin Laursen and Marcus Richardson’s first and only goal of the season, a sweetly taken pk (penalty kick?) - get in there!  Totally Organic was noticed to be suffering from the effects of the  previous evenings entertainment in a Brighton nightclub, apparently the U18 midfield unit had all been out riding hard and dirty and spreading the word - nuff said, job done.  Storrington’s visit to the House of Pain was of course another practice shooting session for the Heath.  Hat-tricks for Rob “the guru” Godfrey and eventual top scorer for the season Matt Butler only being topped by Jonah’s quality footwork after the game in the skill skool challenge -“Are you ready for the noise” was the call - classy stuff “and thanks for passing by” was the reply - love it!

February saw another home game against an improving Pagham side, however the result was the same, a win for the blues, another 3 points and another hat-trick for the predator Matt Butler, much of the same then.  Man of steel for this game was Pat Surlis who capped a super performance with a smart goal and was again a constant threat down the left flank.  Pat has been in great form for the U18s and would often be found downtown doing things in the final 3rd of the pitch that most defenders find unacceptable and difficult to deal with.

Our final 3 games in March saw the Youth team defeat Mile Oak 2-1, draw 1-1 with Lancing and then travel to Shoreham for the final hurdle.  Skipper Waddy and long term casualty Balf both made the trip to support their team mates whilst making time to swap West Ham shineys (football term meaning what?) in the dugout.  Saving the best for last, the Heath found their touch and  played plenty of good stuff, controlling the ball and the game with some high tempo football.  Mikey “Two Touch” Dale opened the scoring after some good work from Pat and Robbo but it was new boy Ryan Lancastle who stole the show with a solid game on his debut for the youth team.  Injuries to the ever improving Sam Harding and Bouba Diop “he likes a splash of lime” saw some defensive reorganisation take place.  On came the joker James O’Dwyer who plugged the gap with another resourceful performance, overseen by Costa’s Jake Mulcahy who has had an inspirational season as caretaker at the heart of the defence.  Jake has made the position of sweeper look easy this year but one has to remember that this is a guy who also makes A levels and making machiatos look easy.  An equaliser from Shoreham only drove the Heath to greater things, keeper Matt Baker took goalkeeping to new heights with some classy saves and the hard working Alex Hall had a shot cleared off the line.  It was only a matter of time before the Heath took the lead and the points, Matt Whiteford’s shot hit the bar but the follow up from Robbo saw him out jump both keeper and defenders to head home - whammy, 2-1..job done.

History was made that day, stories were told and will be told of this team’s epic journey from juniors to seniors, carrying with it the enjoyment both on and off the field.  Many a tale has been told in the pubs of Horsham and the clubs of Brighton - Keep the faith, classic club bangers and all.  The gaff Mike Balfour and Head Honcho Nik Mulcahy wish the squad all the best for the future and hope to keep in touch with the class of 2008 both in BBH HQ, the VC, and via blue army network - keep it real!

Our final celebration takes place at the end of season awards evening, bring it on, get your best cardigans out, things could get messy!

I guess Tom will need his ID with him when he goes to the pub else he will never get his 1st pint

Happy Birthday

BBH U18  - DECEMBER’S REPORT FROM THE GAFFER’S OFFICE

With only one game played in December, the youth  team had a quiet month and so were able to fully enjoy their break from college and the festive Christmas period.

Their only game was against an East Preston side who still had hopes of a top three finish after several good league results.  With several players unavailable, it took some last minute organisation by the Heath’s very own Dream team of Manager Mike Balfour and coach Nik Mulcahy which would rival any Keegan/Shearer combo, to ensure the Heath had 11 players to take the field.  The game began in driving rain and it was the Blues who took the iniative when Pat Surlis nipped in behind the EP defence to net the first goal.  An evenly balanced first half saw both teams pressing and creating chances and it was Matt Baker in the Heath goal who was the busier of the two keepers.  EP then levelled when a slip by Matt Slater allowed a cross to come in which gave the diving Baker no chance.  The Heath then drove up field and it was Rob ‘the guru’ Godfrey, inspired by his new Next cardigan, who fired an unstoppable left foot shot to make the score 2-1 at the break.

Half time and a chance to discuss the months entertainment, a Christmas do for the team which may involve a roast and a trip to the casino for all those willing to risk their wages - “count me in” was the shout from Whitey - what an inspiration.

The second half started with a great move by the home side, a series of passes finding Matt Butler who headed home from close range, 3-1.  Robbo then challenged and won the ball high up the pitch to steam  into the heart of the EP defence and finish expertly 4-1 to the Heath - job done.  A game in which the Heath showed great commitment, attitude and effort under difficult playing conditions and against an EP side with a bad attitude from top to bottom.

With no further games, the Heath were able to organise two training sessions which saw a good turnout from all squad players.  After partying hard, staying up all night and not returning home, Costa’s Jake Mulcahy made both sessions despite a nasty experience of burning his nose in a freakish incident - enough said - Jake epitomises the commitment and spirit of the team and enjoyed the run out, much to the annoyance of the head coach who was furious that our sweeper had not reported home for breakfast that day!

The Youth team also held their very own Christmas party which apparently didn’t involve fancy dress or a roast.  Instead it was down to the London Road Curry Centre for many pints of India’s favourite beer, Cobra and of course a small prawn curry.  A great turnout saw the entire squad attending and those who were old enough headed on to The Chameleon night club for a session of classic club bangers - old skool.

Player of the month for November and December was awarded to Matt ‘totally organic’ Whiteford who has been a revelation on the right flank, terrorising  defences from all parts of the county.  The gaffer made the presentation with a little help from our main sponsor - Weetabix, and commented “Matt has been in great form for the youth team and has made some telling contributions during the month, he is a player who can run at opponents at pace and also has a good eye for goal.”  £20 on red was the bet although the spin turned up  black, just his luck…look out for Matt’s team mates appearing soon.

Broadbridge Heath Youth Team Mates

Name –Andy Waddingham

Position- Midfield General

Nickname -Wadders

Best Trainer –  Tough as I don’t go but I’ve heard Slater or Alex Hall occasionally turn up when they’re not to busy trolley pushing at Tesco.

Most Intelligent –  Jake Mulcahy probably wants this for academic intelligence but I’m awarding this for football intelligence so I would say Godfrey.

Biggest Moaner –I’ve been known to have the occasional moan.

Best Dressed –Well, as I got it last time and as Rob is on the same wavelength as me, he can have it….though I do enjoy the way Alex Hall wears his t-shirts when it (apparently) gets hot at a party.

Best Dance Moves –I do have the “clutch” and the “point” in my locker, but Marcy Rich has a good “crab” so I’d say a tie between us 2.

The Joker –  Whiteford would think he’s a contender for this but his continual quoting from movies, noone knows the quotes
from, isn’t funny! So I’d give it to James O’D  his smart shoes are very amusing.

Worst Taste in Music – The Game, Fiddy Cent and Ja Rule are some of Alex(Gaaaangster)Halls favourites….do I need to say anymore?

And… most memorable moment in career so far –  scoring the only goal from a free-kick to send the U16s into the cup final, or playing at Stoke City’s ground in the County Schools National Final.

Asked for his comments on his midfield general, the gaffer replied…

“Andy has been an exceptional player for  Broadbridge Heath Football club at all levels and possesses all the qualities to go on and play at a higher standard. He is a charismatic player, a pocket rocket with special gifts although the theatre that is diving still needs some improvement - respect!”

BBH U18  - NOVEMBER’S REPORT FROM THE GAFFER’S OFFICE

With only two games in November, the youth team have had time to focus on their performances to date, keep the pressure on league leaders Arundel and to party hard of course.  The month began with a home fixture against a Rustington side who still held hopes of a top 3 league finish.  The game couldn’t have started any better for the Heath when striker Alex Hall was pulled down in the area, the referee having no option but to award a pk.  Up stepped Matt Whiteford whose spot kick was saved, however the kick was ordered to be retaken as the Rustington keeper actually stepped off his line.  Much to the relief of the dug out and home supporters, totally organic stroked the ball into the top right corner of the net - CRASH 1-0 to the Heath.  The blues then put together a move of real quality when a sequence of passes from back to front saw the ball eventually find its way to Alex Hall.  A sweet cut back from the goal line once again found Matt Whiteford whose side footed shot flew into the top left corner of the net - BANG 2-0 to the Heath.  Playing some high tempo football, Rustington pulled 2 quick goals back so honours were even at the break.  Half time and coach Nik Mulcahy took to his notes and dissected the first half-was it to be marmite sandwiches tomorrow, a difficult choice?  Manager Mike Balfour started to rally the troops with that classic club banger, The Jackson 5’s “I want you back,” James O’Dwyer remarked he was rehearsing the moves to Soulja Boy’s “crank dat soulja boi” and Sam Liley was heard to say that he had seen the gaffer at a Mcdonalds drive through - Gripping stuff!

The lads went out fully pumped for the 2nd 45 and an intense 15 minute spell saw the hosts take the lead when Alex Hall popped up to tuck in no 3-ole.  Rustington responded immediately when failure to close down by the Heath defence, much to Nik’s dismay, resulted in the scores being levelled 3-3.  At this point in the game and one day before his 18th birthday, Matt Whiteford took it upon himself to sort matters out.  He collected the ball wide on the right and lashed a fierce shot which sailed into the roof of the net - WALLOP 4-3 to the Heath.  “Now that’s what I call a Matt finish” enthused skipper Andy Waddingham - classic style.

Anyway, with more twists to come and a final Rustington equaliser, a 4-4 draw was probably a fair result.  The Heath were indebted to keeper Matt Baker who pulled off adouble save in the final minutes, honours even and Man of Steel Matt Whiteford quite literally the hat-trick hero - organic!

After a weeks rest and a fully fit squad to choose from, Heath travelled to near neighbours Forest for a league game with more edge than a Horsham v Swansea FA cup tie. With the banter and rivalry you would expect from this sort of game, preparations didn’t quite go to plan as the Youth team turned up without their away kit, secretary Andy Crisp having to cut short a DIY trip to Homebase to finally sort matters out.  Despite an awkward build up the players took to the field and immediately took control of the ball and the game.   Playing into a fierce wind and on a difficult surface, the Heath played some fantasy football and were soon 4 up with goals from Alex Hall, Matt Butler, Andy Waddingham and the impressive Pat Surlis. Half time saw the usual banter, Matt Slater had apparently thrown up whilst brushing his teeth, Costa’s Jake Mulcahy had spilt his macchiato and Marcus Richardson told everyone to “play what you see”-impressive!  The management tried to restore the very best of order and asked the team for more effort and not to let the opposition back into the game.

As ever, the team responded superbly, the 2nd half seeing much of the same, Heath dominating and the Forest keeper being called upon to make several fine saves.  A further 2 goals from Pat Surlis saw a second hat trick in consecutive weeks, Pat’s finishing being a lot more clinical than any of England’s efforts against Croatia.  A treble substitution meant that if your name was Matt then you were taking a break, off came Whiteford, Slater and Butler much to the amusement of all.

At 6-0 Forest were relieved to hear the final whistle, the Bears finishing the month with 4 points from a possible 6, and 10 goals scored - triumphant!

With only 2 games played the management decided to award the November Weetabix Player of the month after December’s fixtures and so combine the two, it was therefore left to skipper and Worthing wannabee Andy Wadd to recall his team mates, look out for his comments appearing soon.

NEWSFLASH- Long term injury casualty and important squad member Tom Balfour has been making good progress in his recovery and hopes to return to action after Christmas.  He has been training hard and recently organised a birthday trip for ex Heath player Ned Verlander to see the Guildford Heat Basketball team. Unfortunately, leaving on Sunday 18th to watch the tip off, the group, much to their dismay, actually learnt that the game had been played 24hrs earlier-an oversight by the organiser-quite bizarre but highly entertaining.

Broadbridge Heath Youth - Team Mates

Name :  Rob Godfrey

Position :  now there’s a question…..N/A

Nickname :  I’ve been fortunate to have been given many nicknames over the years, some of my favourites are ‘Phil Jagielka’,’Crossfield’and of course ‘Gooooooddfreeeeeyy’.More recently’God Godderson’and Robert’always thinking’Godfrey.

Best Trainer –  Apparently Will’ shower gel boy’ Jones is a regular face at training so I’ll give this one to him. Well  done Will.

Most Intelligent –  Jake  Mulcahy has the brains as well as the looks-and he doesn’t mind letting people know about it. As a team we are possibly the most intelligent ever with young Sam Harding predicted A’s and B’s in his GCSEs-that’s our kind of player.

Biggest Moaner –Skipper Andy Wadd loves a good moan, normally directed at Jake. Matt ‘the destroyer’ Slater has a tendency to voice his opinion a bit too much.

Best Dressed –Tough one…Matt Slats has a beautiful watch and many t-shirts but JOD has some classic smart shoes. Andy Wadd is on the same waaaavelength as me when it comes to fashion so, as  I got the award last month, he would probably get my vote

Best Dance Moves –I’ve heard Matt Butler and his dad-sideline hooligan Graham Butler-practise the Macarena every Saturday night? Nik  Mulc is always telling us about his trips to  Shelleys and Bar Med, but we’re yet to experience them for ourselves!

The Joker –  Marcus Rich is the single funniest person ever. The absolute daddy of changing room banter.

Worst Taste in Music – probably Sam Liley, hes into all the happy hardcore nonsense and has a ridiculous size sub woofer in the boot of his tiny corsa

And… most memorable moment in career so far –  Every moment is memorable in this team. For me personally….probably my centre midfield partnership with Marcus Richardson-that was VERY memorable!

After presenting Rob with the ‘You’re a Legend’player of the month award for October, the Gaffer commented….

‘Rob is a valuable and loyal member of the squad who has been with the Heath since he was a kid.  A strong, powerful and versatile player, he has earned this award with some influential performances and a typically artistic dress sense.’

REPORT  FROM THE TOUCHLINE

October has been a tough month for the U18s, like their senior counterparts they have been knocked out of all cup competitions but are still soldiering on in the league.
The start of the month saw the Heath welcome Hastings United in the league cup.  Despite fielding a strong side the Bears never really got going and failed to create any openings against a well-organised Hastings outfit.  Turning round a goal down, a second for Hastings forced the Heath to reorganise and push for an opening.  This left the home side vulnerable at the back which Hastings exploited several times before the final whistle.  A final score line of 5-0 didn’t tell the whole story but on reflection our lack of creation was possibly the most disappointing aspect of the game.
Back to league action the Youth team travelled to Storrington well prepared and up for the three points.  After a rude awakening of conceding within the first two minutes skipper Andy Waddingham grabbed the bull by the horns and slammed in the equalizer from the edge of the box.  The Heath then moved up through the gears and continued pressure saw Storrington put through their own net and Alex Hall scoring with a Fernando Torres style finish-Ole!  At 3-1 up and roasted by coach Nik Mulcahy, the boys responded
superbly, the energetic Rob Godfrey scoring number 4 with a great diving header and number 5 following good work down the right flank by Matt Butler.  A final score of 5-2 saw the Heath maintain their push for top spot in the league.

Back to cup duties and the Dennis Probee Youth Cup saw BBH travel to Ryman Youth outfit Burgess Hill.  With several key players cup tied and with one or two injuries, the U18s had to rely on their younger squad members to fulfil the fixture.  The game started brilliantly for the team with a quickly taken free kick by Will ’Jonah’ Jones finding Sam Liley who struck a low shot inside the near post much to the amazement of well respected keeper Joe Hoare.  Leading 1-0 for 30 minutes of the game and indebted to debutant keeper Tom Blandford for several theatrical saves, the Heath defence was finally undone and Burgess Hill levelled.  A second goal followed so at halftime with the score at 2-1 the Heath were able to regroup and reorganise.  Marshalled at the back by Costa’s Jake Mulcahy, the Heath defence welcomed back Matt ‘the destroyer’ Slater when the unlucky James Taylor had to go off injured.  Slats, coming back from an ankle injury sustained while trampolining in the garden, added experience to the back four but was unable to prevent further goals from a team that were beginning to grow in confidence.  As the game wore on Burgess Hill scored again despite the resilient Marcus Richardson who played through the pain barrier and worked his socks off for the team.  A score line of 6-2 was the final nail in the coffin for any cup success this season but gaffer Mike Balfour was delighted with the effort and commitment of the team and was heard to remark that the most important aspect of the day was not to forget the potatoes.

For their final game in October the U18 travelled to Portslade to play an improving Mile Oak youth team buoyant after their cup win over Rustington.  With possibly their strongest line up to date the Heath welcomed back Pat Surlis and Mike Dale from Cup duties with Horsham.  Pat has been a wicked signing for the youth team and has shown the sort of form that has made him the classy player he is while Two Touch has been an inspiration, now pulling the strings in central midfield with skip Andy Wadd.  ’A partnership made in heaven’ was the comment from the touchline although she was only 11, but quite profound anyway.  BBH began steadily and were soon into their stride although a series of missed opportunities meant that the teams went in level at half time.  The second half was a different game altogether with the Heath dominating both territory and possession.  From a corner it took a thunderous effort from fully 30 yards by Matt Slater to break the deadlock.  Almost immediately a Matt Butler header rattled the bar, the subsequent rebound being tucked away by the predatory Alex Hall.  Alex then netted his second and the Heaths third with a typical strikers effort from inside the 6 yard box, a final score of 3-0 being a convincing win and another 3 league points.

At the end of October the youth team sit joint top of the league level on points with their fierce rivals Arundel. After the game, the gaffer, Mike Balfour awarded the Weetabix Player of the month for October to Rob Godfrey.  Rob has been one of the most reliable players to date and will always be one of the strongest on the pitch.  He is a real quality player and will always look to his mentor, Sheffield United Legend Phil Jagielka for guidance.  He was presented with a box of Weetabix ‘eat smart get active’ from our sponsors, the gaffer remarked…

‘Rob is a valuable and loyal member of the squad who has been with the Heath since he was a kid.  A strong, powerful and versatile player, he has earned this award with some influential performances and a typically artistic dress sense.’

Watch out for Rob’s comments on his team mates appearing soon!

Broadbridge Heath : Team Mates

Name :Jake Mulcahy

Position :Centre Back/Sweeper

Nickname :Baldy Mulc (still…..even though I’ve grown my hair because of this nickname!)

Best Trainer – Attending training has not been my strong point this season so this is a difficult one…but I’ll guess at Will ‘Jonah’ Jones,he looks like the hardcore training type.

Most Intelligent –Hmm…as I can’t choose myself…I’d say Marcus Richardson, aka Rik, the number 2 business student in the world. The 4 As he got weren’t bad either.

Biggest Moaner – After the departure of Dave ‘shut the hell up’ Lyons, its got to be Pat Surlis…always moaning. You just can’t keep the kid quiet.

Best Dressed – The fashion guru Rob Godfrey, he can make even a girly cardigan look manly.

Best Dance Moves – Andy ‘I have AUTHORITY’ Waddingham the true inventor of world renowned dance routines such as ‘The clutch’ and ‘The point’.

The Joker – Its got to be James O’Dwyer aka J.O.D, the benchwarmer who loves the changing room banter and takes the insults on the chin. Also, the master of comebacks-(to a Lancing player)’yeah, well your shirt smells like your mum’…classic

Worst Taste in Music – Andy Waddingham - I have heard from a reliable source that our captain likes to mosh in front of a mirror to German rock sensation Ramstein            (is he allowed to do that at his age?)

And…

Most memorable moment in career so far – Lobbing my own keeper, Matt Baker, from outside the box with a ‘slightly’

mis-hit clearance…quality finish. Luckily we won 2-1

Jake was handed the Weetabix 'You're a Legend' player of the month award  for September after our latest league game together with a box of Oatiflakes from our sponsors. The gaffer commented after the game that 'Jake is a vital piece of our defensive unit and a fully committed player to the BBH youth team!'

BROADBRIDGE HEATH YOUTH  –  REPORT FROM THE DUG OUT

The U18s have had a great start to the season and are currently playing with confidence and flair, lying 3rd in the league after 6 games they are optimistic that with the same levels of performance they will be able to maintain their position and
possibly push on.
Loosing 4 players from last seasons squad, the management team of Mike Balfour and Nik Mulcahy have looked to the clubs junior sides to recruit and strengthen their ranks.Fifteen year old Sam Harding, a left sided defender who is a member of the U16 squad, has made his way into the starting 11 with some accomplished performances. A player with a bright future,he has shown great maturity and has settled  in quickly adapting to the demands of the County Youth League with ease.
We have also seen 5 U17s make their full debuts for the Youth team; Matt Butler, top scorer for the U16s last season has continued  hitting the net, notching 5 goals in just 5 games.A player who has that instinct of being in the right place at the right time,he will look to build on his current form and continue putting away the chances he gets. He possesses great pace and good technique and has formed a great partnership up top with the hard working Alex Hall. James O’Dwyer is a
versatile player who has played full back and wide midfield,Will Jones is a strong defender who has proved to be a vital squad member,James Taylor is a steady and reliable center back and Elliot Brackpool is a busy central midfielder with good vision.Josh Howell completes the 5,he is a robust player who is currently juggling football and work but has once again proved how vital he is to the squad.
With the core of last years U18s remaining and lead by the gifted Andy Waddingham, the Youth team have started to play some fantasy football and are delighted that the younger players have blended in so well.Manager and coach set a target of at least one trophy this season and are confident that with a fully fit squad that this will be a realistic and achieveable goal.

Sunday 2/9/07
Broadbridge Heath U18s 3  Shoreham U18 3

The first game of the 2007/8 season kicked off with two BBH under 18 debuts, Sam Harding at left back and Elliott Brackpool in the centre of midfield. Together with the return of Matt Butler to the forward line, it was very much a new look BBH side against new opposition.
In very warm conditions none of the new faces looked out of place as BBH made a bright start. Dominating possession in the early stages it was no surprise in the 24th minute when BBH took the lead. Excellent work down the right by Sam Liley resulted in a clinical finish by Alex Hall. (1-0). Unfortunately BBH were unable to build further on this early dominance and only four minutes later allowed Shoreham back into the game. Possession was lost in midfield and keeper Matt Baker was unable to stop a powerful low shot. (1-1). Shoreham's confidence grew further when after 35 minutes a long range speculative shot flew into the top of the BBH net (2-1).
The second half began much like the first with BBH in control. A period of sustained pressure resulted in a 54th minute equalizer from close range by captain Andy Waddingham (2-2). This was followed up by the second long range goal of the match as a superb Matt Butler strike cleared the Shoreham keeper (3-2). Such was the
see-saw nature of this game, rather than BBH maintain control, it was Shoreham who looked more dangerous as they searched for another equalizer. Two more BBH debuts resulted as Will Jones and James Taylor joined the action. Eventual 'man of the match' Rob Godfrey was allowed to push up into midfield, together with sweeper Matt Slater on the right wing. Unfortunately these changes and the fresh legs in defence could not prevent what seemed like an inevitable 74th minute equalizer by Shoreham. BBH failed to deal with a cross from the right and a close range finish drew the sides level again (3-3). The final 15 minutes saw Shoreham increase the pressure and looked more likely to get that winning goal. Saves from BBH keeper Matt Baker and an excellent last tackle by Jake Mulcahy meant that BBH managed to hold on for a draw and gain the first point of the season.
